Komárom

Komárom

Komárom is regarded as one oldest inhabited settlements which has been populated since the Stone Age. First, Celts settled down there then the Romans, who strengthened the riverbank with forts and military camps.  Brigetio, which was built on the right bank of the Danube, was the legionary camp of the former Limes; and the civil settlements was the prosperous city of Pannonia. Goths, Avars and Slays lived there but this beautiful, fertile land could be preserved for the Hungarians who were coming from Asia. With the help of King Bela IV., Komárom got the privilegies of the town in 1265 and the citizens receved the same rights as the citizens of Buda. The large-scale development of the town started in the beginning of 18th century.  Furthermore it played an important role during the Napoleonic wars and the War of Independence and Revolution of 1848/49. After the Trianon treaty, which followed the I.World War, the town became separated. The southern part, Komárom, belongs to Hungary and the northern part as North-Komárom(Komárno) belongs to Slovakia.

The main tourist attractions are the charming public places, Fortification system, Brigetio Thermalspa, and the rich history of the town.

Komárom has a complicated history, starting from that there are two of it, which are separated by the Danube and the national border running across the middle of the city. The seal of North-Komárom has included the symbol of the city, the fortress system, since the 15th century. In 1745 Maria Theresa granted a charter of status of privilege and a new coat of arms to the city: the former simple but nice coat of arms was amended with several elements.

The newest sight of the city, the Countryard of Europe, was built in the spacious countryard of the Zichy Palace. According to the ojective of the architects, each building reflects the characteristic architectural style of the different European countries.
